Shares outstanding

Shares outstanding are the shares currently held by shareholders, excluding shares held by the company itself.

This count is used in market capitalisation and per-share figures. New share issues can increase the count. Buybacks can reduce it, while potential shares from options may be included in a separate diluted count.
