Analyst rating

An analyst rating expresses an analyst’s view of a share, often as buy, hold or sell.

Buy, hold and sell express a more positive, neutral or more negative view. Overweight and underweight mean the analyst expects better or weaker returns than a comparison group, often an index. Outperform and underperform describe similar comparisons, while Equal Weight means roughly in line with the group. Reduce means the analyst suggests a smaller holding. The labels and time periods vary between research firms, and ratings can change when assumptions change.
