How to work out a dividend

Multiply your shares by the dividend per share. Exxon Mobil has paid $4.12 per share over the last twelve months, so 100 shares paid $412.00.

The dividend yield is the same dividend divided by the price. At today's price of $165.87, that is 2.5%. The number moves with the price every day, even when the dividend stands still.

To get a dividend you need to own the stock before the ex-dividend date. Why the price tends to fall that day is in the lesson on the ex-dividend date, and the study of ex-dividend dates shows how long it took to get back.

How the calculator works

  • Every amount is per share, in today's shares. After a split the older amounts are restated, so the same number of shares applies to every year.
  • The year is the year of the ex-dividend date, not the day the money came. The table starts in 2016, or with the company's first dividend after that. The running year says so far.
  • When two dividends are almost exactly a year apart, the last twelve months count only the newer one, so a moved ex-dividend date doesn't count double.
  • Special dividends are included when they are stored as dividends.
  • A year with no stored dividend shows as zero. We have not checked every amount against the companies' own reports, so a special dividend can be missing.
  • Prices are closing prices up to Nov 6, 2026. Tax and fees are not included, and the dividends are not assumed to buy more shares.
  • 14 of the 20 large US companies we follow.

Amazon, Tesla, Berkshire Hathaway, Netflix, Palantir, AMD are not included, because we hold no dividend for them since 2016.
