Why did L'Air Liquide stock fall on 8 October?

Written after the close on

L'Air Liquide −0.40% · CAC 40 −0.51%

Air Liquide slipped as buyback news settled. Over the last five trading days Air Liquide rose slightly, moving against a clearly weaker CAC 40, the French blue-chip index. The likely driver was the company's authorisation of a share buyback worth 4 billion euros, a plan to repurchase its own stock, announced earlier in the week, with activist investor Elliott Management also weighing in on the company. The stock gave back a little in the latest session as that news was digested, in line with a slightly lower market. Next scheduled update is the mid-February 2027 earnings report.
