Why did Orlen move?

Written after the close on

Orlen rose very sharply, likely on relief that its windfall-tax bill is now a known number. Over the last five trading days Orlen was roughly unchanged, lagging a slightly higher S&P 500 and a slightly higher energy sector, while Brent crude fell clearly. The main driver was likely the new windfall tax on extraordinary energy profits, signed into law and estimated by Orlen at 2 billion zloty for March-August 2026, which hit the shares early in the period; the stock then recovered as the figure became concrete and as a key supplier resumed oil exports. Orlen also opened its eighth hydrogen refuelling station and is seeking AI partners, small positives that partly offset the tax drag. Watch the early-November earnings report for how the tax and refining margins feed through.
