Why did Mastercard move?
Written after the close on
Mastercard rose sharply as its stablecoin push advanced. Over the last five trading days Mastercard fell slightly, moving against a market that rose clearly and doing better than a financial sector that fell clearly. The likely driver of the latest session was the launch of Open USD, a dollar-pegged payment token backed by Mastercard and other payment firms, together with the earlier $1.8 billion deal for the UK crypto payments firm BVNK and the migration of SoFi Bank's $25 billion card portfolio to stablecoin settlement on Mastercard's network. A stablecoin is a digital token designed to hold a steady value, here one dollar. Watch the late-October earnings report for how these payments initiatives feed into results.
