Why did Alphabet stock rise on 9 October?

Alphabet rose slightly as cloud-growth optimism outweighed legal worries.
Over the last five trading days Alphabet rose slightly, while the S&P 500 rose clearly and the Communication Services sector was roughly flat, so the stock lagged the market but moved while its sector stalled.
The gains likely came from upbeat commentary on Google Cloud and artificial intelligence, including a view that Google could undercut OpenAI with cheaper AI, and from cloud revenue growth of 82% in the June quarter.
A securities fraud lawsuit over the delayed Gemini 3.5 Pro launch and heavy AI spending that pushed free cash flow negative likely capped the rise.
Watch the late-October earnings report, when investors will focus on cloud growth and the cost of the AI build-out.
