Why did General Mills stock rise on 8 October?

Written after the close on

General Mills +2.58%

General Mills rose sharply, lifted with its defensive sector. General Mills rose clearly over the last five trading days, outpacing a clearly higher S&P 500 while moving in line with a sharply stronger Consumer Defensive sector, so the advance looks mostly sector-driven rather than company-specific. The main company thread was governance and leadership: the annual meeting confirmed Dana McNabb as incoming chief executive from January 2027, with Jeff Harmening moving to executive chair, and the board approved officer legal protections and preferred-stock limits. A tender offer for up to $750 million of senior notes, a segment president's share sale, and a soft analyst consensus of "Reduce" (a broker's sell-leaning rating) were the other items in view, while the stock still sits near decade lows after a weak quarter and shrinking profits. Watch the late-December earnings report, where volume and mix trends and the cost-savings program are the swing factors.
