Why did AstraZeneca move?

Written after the close on

AstraZeneca fell sharply as investors weighed fresh cancer-deal spending. AstraZeneca fell sharply over the last five trading days, a bigger drop than the slight decline in the wider Stockholm market, and it also fell in the latest session even as the market rose clearly. The likely driver is the two-part cancer collaboration with Summit Therapeutics: AstraZeneca is putting $2 billion into newly issued Summit shares and pairing its antibody drug conjugates — lab-made molecules that carry a toxic payload directly to tumour cells — with Summit's ivonescimab, and investors may be reading the cash outlay and added development cost as a drag rather than an immediate win. Positive regulatory news, such as the priority review for Imfinzi plus enfortumab vedotin in bladder cancer and the EU approval of Trixeo for asthma, did not offset that pressure. Watch the late-October earnings report for how these collaborations and the pipeline are being funded.
