Why did Autoliv stock fall on 7 October?

Written after the close on

Autoliv −2.37%

Autoliv fell sharply, tracking a weak market. Autoliv fell clearly over the last five trading days, in line with a slightly weaker OMX Stockholm 30, so this was mostly a market-wide move rather than anything company-specific. The only company news was routine: two new members joined its Research Advisory Board, a group of outside experts who advise on long-term safety research, and it retired repurchased shares, which simply cancels stock it had bought back and reduces the number of shares in issue. Neither of those explains a decline, so the drop likely reflects broad caution in cyclical shares — stocks like car-parts makers that rise and fall with the economy — ahead of its late-October earnings report. Watch that report, since it is the next scheduled event that could move the shares.
