P/E ratio

The P/E ratio divides a company's share price by its earnings per share.

A share priced at 100 with yearly earnings of 5 per share has a P/E of 20. The earnings may describe the past year or an estimate for a future year. A loss or a temporary profit jump can make the ratio difficult to interpret.
