Bid–ask spread

The bid–ask spread is the difference between the best selling price and the best buying price.

With a bid of 99 and an ask of 100, the spread is 1. Crossing the spread is a trading cost even when there is no separate fee. Spreads often widen when liquidity is low or uncertainty rises.
